Synthetic Phonics, Explained
Sounds first, then blending: what it means, how it differs from analytic phonics, and which programs use it.
Synthetic phonics is a way of teaching reading that starts with the individual sounds letters make, then teaches a child to blend those sounds together into words. Sounds first, words second.
It’s the most common method label in language arts on this site, carried by 13 programs. It’s also the approach behind the research consensus on how children learn to read, which is why nearly every reputable learn-to-read program uses some version of it.
The name has nothing to do with anything artificial. It’s from synthesis, meaning putting parts together. That’s the whole idea in a word: small pieces, combined.
How it works
A child is taught the individual sounds that letters and letter combinations make, and then taught to blend those sounds into words.
Shown the word sat, a child sounds out /s/ /a/ /t/ and blends them into a word they’ll recognize. Shown ship, they need to have been taught that sh makes one sound. The sequence matters: sounds are introduced in a deliberate order, and children read only words built from sounds already covered.
That last point is what produces the odd little sentences in early readers. A book about a fat cat on a mat exists because those are the only sounds taught so far.
Three things follow from that design, and they’re the reason the approach holds up:
Nothing is guessed. A child never has to work out a word from the picture or the shape of the sentence. Every word on the page is decodable with sounds they’ve already been taught.
Nothing is assumed. The program doesn’t rely on a child noticing a pattern by themselves. If a letter combination makes a sound, the program says so out loud.
The order is fixed. Common, reliable sounds come first. Irregular ones come later, once a child has enough success behind them to handle an exception.
An example, start to finish
It helps to see what a week looks like rather than a definition.
Say the new sound is sh. A typical lesson introduces it directly: this is sh, it says /sh/, here’s how your mouth makes it. The child practices the sound on its own, away from any word.
Then it goes into words the child can already almost read: ship, shop, shed, fish, wish. Every other sound in those words has already been taught, so sh is the only new thing they’re carrying.
Then it goes into a sentence, then a short passage. The fish is in the ship. Silly, and deliberately so. The sentence exists to give the child a win using only what they know.
At no point is the child asked to look at a picture and guess, or to recognize ship as a shape they’ve memorized. They build it every time, which is slower at first and much faster later.
Synthetic phonics vs analytic phonics
This is the comparison that comes up most, and the two names are close enough to be confusing.
Analytic phonics goes the other direction. It starts with whole words a child already knows and draws the patterns out of them. A lesson might put cat, can, and cap side by side and lead the child to notice they all start the same way. The sound is discovered rather than taught. You’ll sometimes see it called analogy phonics or implicit phonics, and the word “implicit” is the tell.
Synthetic phonics goes from parts to whole. Analytic phonics goes from whole to parts.

The practical difference is what each one assumes. Analytic phonics assumes a child can hold several words in mind, compare them, and pull out what they share. Plenty of children can. A child who’s finding reading hard usually can’t yet, and the approach quietly asks them to do the difficult part alone.
That’s why the research consensus favors the synthetic approach, and why it matters more the more a child is struggling. For a strong reader the two often arrive at the same place. For a child who isn’t picking reading up by exposure, being told the sound is the difference between progress and another bad week.
Most real programs aren’t purely one or the other. A synthetic program will still point out word families, and an analytic one will still teach some sounds directly. What you’re looking for is which one leads. If the program introduces sounds on a schedule and builds words from them, it’s synthetic. If it puts words in front of the child and asks what they notice, it’s analytic.
Whole language and balanced literacy
Worth naming separately, because it’s a different thing again and it’s what many families are reacting against.
Whole language and balanced literacy teach children to identify words using context, pictures, and the first letter. A child using these strategies looks fluent on a familiar book and stalls on an unfamiliar one, because the strategies work on the book and the memory rather than on the print.
For a child who’s already finding reading hard, guessing tends to make things worse. It builds a habit that has to be unlearned later. That’s why every reading program on this site is phonics-based.
If you encounter a program built on three-cueing, predictable text, or “reading strategies,” that’s balanced literacy, whatever else the marketing says.
Who it tends to suit
Nearly every beginning reader. This is the closest thing to a default in early reading. The question is usually which program delivers it in a form you can teach.
Programs vary in how much of the work falls on you. Most sit high on parent involvement, though Reading Eggs and Hooked on Phonics carry more of the teaching themselves through software, and Spelling Workout and Explode the Code are largely independent workbooks.
They also vary in pace. Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons is scripted tightly enough that a nervous parent can open it and start. Logic of English Foundations is more demanding and covers more ground.
Where it shows up on this site

Spelling has one carrying the label directly, Spelling Workout, because most spelling programs describe their method in other terms even when the underlying logic is the same.
What it is not
Synthetic phonics isn’t the same as Orton-Gillingham, though the two overlap and five programs here carry both. Synthetic phonics describes what is taught. Orton-Gillingham adds how: multisensory, diagnostic, one to one, and paced by the child rather than the schedule. If your child is struggling, that difference is the one that matters.
It’s also not a whole language arts curriculum. Synthetic phonics teaches decoding, meaning turning print into words. Comprehension, vocabulary, and writing are separate work, which is why programs like The Good and the Beautiful Language Arts and Abeka Language Arts bundle phonics into something wider.
And it isn’t a guarantee of speed. Some children move through a sequence in months and others take two years. The order stays the same; the pace is the child’s.
